Return flight ticket

I worked last year for a large financial institution through a third party as a ‘contractor’. the third party company paid for my visa, but not for relocation. The department I was working at lost the finding so I was made redundant and went back to my home country. The third party company didn’t pay for my flight or anything else. I understand that they were obliged to by the UAE law - is it common practice for companies to pay/not pay for the return flight ticket? would it be different in my case since I was a contractor so I was paid per day?
