New to the game

I just played my first mission in the community objective in that purple area, and it was fun but I didn't really understand what was going on, I know the story of the game is constantly evolving and I'm not fully clueless(though before starting I believed you only fought bugs and robots), so I'm not sure if it's better to research what's been going on or if I'll understand through playing alone.

Game seems really fun but definitely feels a little overwhelming at times
