The Rose

What wonder in a rose, what beauty in its bloom!

Its charm enchants, a likeness to a cheek's soft blush.

The red rose speaks of passion and desire;

have mercy, O most merciful!

The yellow rose stirs jealousy and ache;

be tender, O most compassionate!

The white rose breathes of innocence, awake to romance;

pluck it as the noble do.

Messenger of lovers, keeper of the heart,

gardener, tend your rose, but heed its thorn.

Nurture your love, and play an affectionate part,

lest longing wound you, and leave you torn.

Guide your passion, let its wreath bring peace,

and kiss the hands that tend its sweet release.
