Feel like my bf violated my privacy
My boyfriend uses Snapchat as a means of communication, which I think is quite an ick regardless, but he is younger than me (only by a year) so I thought okay whatever. At the start of our relationship, I specifically asked him if he had the ‘map’ on and to turn it off if he did because I don’t want people knowing where I live - I generally don’t like anyone knowing anything about me that I haven’t told them. I said all of this.
Despite this, he tells people things about me - specific details about things I do, where I live, what we do and where exactly we go at the weekend. I know this because we work in the same building and people have asked me about specific places and things. I’ve said I don’t like it, I get that he is more of a ‘people person’ than I am, but I just don’t like telling people more than is necessary, like I don’t know things about them and I know they wouldn’t tell me, so why should they know these things about me? For example, if someone asked what we did at the weekend, my boyfriend would say “we went a drive to [exact town] and went for a walk in [exact park] and then went to dinner at [exact restaurant name] and ate [specific meal]” etc. I would say we went a walk and out for dinner, and I would only expand if they asked, I don’t see the need to add the extra details unless someone asks for specifics.
Anyway, at the time that I asked about the Snapchat map, my boyfriend said he didn’t have it turned on. I asked if he could check and show me because I just had a feeling that he would have it on, and he said no because he knows he didn’t have it on. He has since made several impassioned speeches about not understanding why people need to know people’s locations, how he thinks it’s weird people track others, how he thinks life360 is super weird, basically that it’s toxic and strange. My sister wanted me to turn my location services on for her, and he gave me a big speech about how it’s weird she wants to know where I am and why does she want to know what I’m doing, which was also motivated imo by his active dislike for my sister.
And now it turns out he’s had his location on the Snapchat map for presumably the entire time we’ve been dating (since the start of the year). I just feel like my privacy has been hugely violated - I specifically said I don’t want or like people knowing where I live. I don’t want all his friends googling my house value or looking at its past listing pictures online, which are things he’s said they’ve done before. I don’t want everyone knowing exactly where we go on the weekend or on holidays.
I don’t like that he lied and I don’t like that he has been so incredibly hypocritical - I’ve had to listen to his speeches when I’ve checked my sister’s location or she’s checked mine, yet he’s had his on for any random person to see. I don’t want people I don’t like from work knowing where I live. I don’t want his friends to know where I live and have opinions on it. I don’t want random outsiders knowing where I go and what I do. I don’t know anything about these people but they might think they know about me.
He claims he must have only just turned it on recently, “when he went on a trip with friends and one of them couldn’t find the exact meeting location because google maps wasn’t sending them to the right place”. There is absolutely no way at all that the Snapchat map could guide you somewhere that a pin on google maps couldn’t. And I know for a fact that he had it on before that trip, because I saw it over his shoulder but felt at the time that I couldn’t comment. I feel irritated now because he lied and technically has lied several times, and also because he has been so hypocritical.
He is acting like my annoyance is irrational. But it truly does feel like a violation. I know that realistically no one deeply cares where I live, but I am annoyed that: people who I know nothing about know, people can make their own perceptions about things, that he lied, and that he was massively hypocritical about it all.
Is it irrational to feel upset about?
