Has anyone actually found a translation app that works well during phone calls?

However, there was an instance when I had to talk to someone whose language was not English, and it proved to be quite difficult to use a regular translation app during the call. Before I could finish translating what I meant to say and wait for the reply, the entire conversation had gone awry.

I have tried several methods since then, but I cannot seem to find the right ones yet that would really work during phone calls.

Is there one that you know of that can make the call more natural?
