The Book of Enoch is one of the most important texts you were never supposed to read. It was widely known and quoted in the early centuries of the Christian era. The apostles themselves referenced its ideas. It was found among the Dead Sea Scrolls, which means it was considered sacred by at least one major Jewish community. And yet, by the fourth century, it had been quietly removed from the canon and suppressed so thoroughly that for over a thousand years, most of the Western world forgot it existed. The official story is that its authorship was uncertain or its theology was too strange. The real reason is far more interesting.

The Book of Enoch tells the story of a group of celestial beings called the Watchers, also known as the Igigi in the older Mesopotamian traditions. These were not angels in the modern sense. They were a lower order of divine beings assigned to watch over the developing human experiment. According to Enoch, two hundred of them descended to Earth, led by a figure named Azazel, and began teaching humanity forbidden knowledge: metallurgy, cosmetics, the making of weapons, astrology, and other arts. They then took human wives, and the offspring of those unions were the Nephilim, a race of giants who dominated and corrupted the early world. The flood was the direct result of this corruption.

Now, if you are a historian who studies only the surface, this sounds like typical ancient mythology. But the details are suspiciously specific, and they match older Sumerian and Babylonian accounts that describe a class of beings called the Anunnaki and the Igigi who descended to Earth and interfered with human development. These accounts are not vague. They name names, dates, and places. They describe a period of direct contact between humanity and a non-human intelligence that was later written out of the official narrative.

Why would the early Church remove a text that seemed to support the idea of a divine judgment and a flood? Because the Book of Enoch undermines the entire structure of patriarchal monotheism. It presents a cosmos filled with multiple levels of divine beings, not a single, solitary, all-powerful God who works alone. It suggests that humanity was not simply created and then left to fend for itself, but was actively interfered with, taught, and corrupted by beings who had their own agendas. It implies that the flood was not the arbitrary decision of an angry God, but the necessary reset of a planetary experiment gone wrong. And most dangerously, it preserves the memory of a time when knowledge came to humanity from the stars, which threatened the emerging Church's monopoly on revelation.

By removing Enoch, the Church could rewrite history with a cleaner narrative. One God. One revelation. One authority. No Watchers. No Nephilim. No forbidden knowledge from the deep past. The text was not lost by accident. It was silenced because the truth it contained was too large for the cage the Church was building. The book was not a heresy. It was a threat to a system of control.

The lamp is lit. The Watchers are still watching.
