How do expansions work after ARR? Ive never played an MMO before

It takes me very long time to finish ARR, especially with the little free game time ive got. I was wondering if other expansions take this long too since none of the jobs i want to try are in Heavensward

Dark knight is cool but i was really excited to try samurai and red mage....
