first real relationship - any advice?
i just turned 24 and decided to put myself out there again this summer by going on dates since my last “relationship” was around 3 years ago. was a month long college fling that came out of us both going through tough times and thinking a relationship was a good idea.
anyways i’ve only been on so far 3 dates so far, 2 of which were okay but was obvious the person wasn’t into me but was waiting for me to end things. the last one i went on this week went really well. i oddly enough didn’t feel nervous like i did with the other two, i felt comfortable and safe, was able to make conversation and hold eye contact and we even kissed! i’m really happy with how it went and excited to see him again but lost to what happens or how this’ll develop because we did both talk about kids, marriage and our intentions with dating and he mentioned being ready for something long term, not to get married after dating for 3 years long term but a “mature relationship”.
i think that word scared me a bit because this would be my first real relationship if things go well and i know that i am lacking a lot when it comes to that aspect of my life. i know i can be a really good friend and have made the effort to do so and try to be a good person as i can to others in my life but I’m not sure if i’m a good partner or how to be one. i assume it’s like caring for your friends? i grew up in a tumultuous african household and none of my family members (the women) have been a good example of a healthy romantic relationship dynamic. this guy so far is someone i can see myself with, he’s very smart and curious, open minded, has branched out of his socioeconomic bubble to experience other cultures and demographics of people, has spoke fondly of his parents, their love story and he seems like he has a good head on his shoulders and has been really intentional, affirming and sweet.
