Advice on where to stay for a tourist who might want to move to Chicago?

Hi!

I am traveling to Chicago with my family at the end of September. Right now, I am considering moving to Chicago eventually. I was wondering what Chicago people would recommend for hotel stays and neighborhoods stays outside of downtown?

I’m not against downtown if that’s the best fit but I would love to be able to spend more time and explore areas that are less touristy to help give me a better feel of the city.

Any suggestions in general also welcome for restaurants, events, pub suggestions etc
