Feeling like an idiot

Question/Discussion

I’ve never felt more embarrassed, stupid, and angry. I started this job a month ago right out of college, with limited experience beyond a few internships in different areas of law. I was completely transparent about my experience during the interview, and they hired me shortly after my second interview.

Training was extremely limited. My first day was mostly observation, and after that it was essentially “figure it out and ask questions.” I asked questions constantly, took notes, apologized for mistakes, and was repeatedly reassured that I was doing fine and that asking questions was the right thing to do.
Most of my mistakes happened because I simply wasn’t aware I was supposed to do something. Other staff even told me, “It’s okay because you wouldn’t have known this.” I can’t magically know procedures I was never taught, especially when I was coming from completely different areas of law.

A few days ago, I was asked why I hadn’t done something I genuinely didn’t know I needed to do. I apologized, asked questions, fixed it, and requested a cheat sheet so I could make sure I wasn’t missing anything. They made one for me, and looking at it, I realized there were several things I had never been told to do.
This morning my inbox was empty, so I went around asking the attorneys if they needed help. One gave me a longer task to work on. While I was doing it, HR came in and asked me to come with him.

He told me he appreciated my professionalism and hard work, but they were letting me go because my mistakes apparently couldn’t be “course corrected.” I was shocked. I’d been there one month. When I asked for specific examples, he couldn’t really give me any. I explained that my mistakes weren’t from laziness or negligence. They were from not knowing what I was supposed to do and not being taught. He said he would make a note of that for future training.

I completely understand that employers can decide someone isn’t a good fit, but I’m struggling with how this was handled. There was never a meeting telling me I was in serious trouble, no write-up, no probation, or even a conversation that my job was at risk.

I walked out feeling like an absolute idiot, and honestly, I’m just angry and embarrassed. I genuinely tried my hardest, asked for help, and wanted to learn. I just wish I had been given the opportunity to actually correct the things I was doing wrong.

Idk why I’m posting this. Maybe for reassurance or to hear another perspective? I tried so hard to work well, but not knowing things is apart of not having experience. I just feel so dumb
