Carpet to LVP: the floor prep matters more than the sample board

Replacing builder carpet with LVP sounds straightforward until the carpet comes up and the slab or subfloor tells a different story. The material choice matters, but prep is what decides whether the finished floor looks clean.

Bid questions worth asking:

  • Is floor flatness included, or is leveling an allowance/change order?
  • How will old tack strips, paint overspray, adhesive, and cracks be handled?
  • Are transitions, door undercuts, baseboards, and stair noses included?
  • Is moisture testing needed on slab areas?
  • What happens if the stairs are not square or need extra trim work?

A low flooring bid can be fine, but only if it says what prep is included. Otherwise the “surprise” work starts after demolition when you have fewer options.
