NeX GEn is the second of the two POST HUMAN albums by Bring Me To Horizon and the first I have listened to in full. It has some tracks with fast drumming and heavy guitars, such as DArkSide, Kool-Aid, with screamed lyrics on it, that I immediately liked. The walls upon walls of sound these songs create are catchy and sound really good in my opinion. YOUtopia has the best, most memorable chorus and stands out. It can be seen as some sort of title track, as it is about the dream of a perfect self, the yearning for a post-human, purely blissful existence. Apart from that, I feel like this album is a somewhat lighter relase, compared to their other albums, as it has tracks that don‘t take themselves too seriously, such as \[ost\] p.u.s.s.-e, LosT and trippy ones, such as liMOusIne, which is a collab with AURORA. The line „Come closer / Don‘t want closure / I‘ll stitch myself up“ alludes to a life held together by fixes. And the line from LosT „And my ego is not my amigo“ is pretty funny to be fair and fitting for this track that is about losing it, with Oliver Sykes running away from clinic personnel wearing a blood-soaked straight jacket in the music video. sTraNgeRs continues in the same vein and is also a good metalcore track, with fast drumming, a screamed hook and cool-sounding guitars. R.i.p (duskCOre Remix) has more interesting lines, such as „Your therapist is gonna need some therapy“ and „How do you keep your fu\*king mind in a fantasy“. The visualization features a video game character from an imaginary beat em up, switching through different outfits, which is a nod to gamers who have found a way to escape this world playing video games. I feel like it can be said in general that this album is in touch with popular culture. But it hits still a bit heavier than pop music.
To conclude, I feel like NeX GEn hits in some places, offering tracks with high aggression, fast drumming, heavy breakdowns and big hooks. Being a long album, there are a bit too many unremarkable tracks between those aforementionned though. They‘re good enough, just not noteworthy. On the whole, it is a good album and an easy listen that could have been more concise. I can recommend it if you like the fast drumming and aggression of metalcore in general and are looking for an album that looks to the future thematically, doesn’t take itself too seriously and has a modern sound.
