Would you leave a long-term relationship at 35+ if you still wanted kids?

’ve been thinking about the pressure people feel when the “relationship timeline” and the “biological timeline” don’t line up.

Especially in South Asian families, marriage and children often get treated like one big sequence:

Date seriously → get engaged → get married → have kids → everyone finally stops asking questions at weddings and family events.

But real life doesn’t always follow that order.

Sometimes you’re 34 or 35 and realize the person you’ve been with for years isn’t actually right for you. Sometimes an engagement ends. Sometimes you still want biological children, but starting over feels terrifying. Sometimes family members say things like:

“You don’t have time to be picky.”

“You already invested so many years.”

“No one is perfect.”

“Just get married and figure it out.”

And that’s where I think things get complicated.

Because yes, biology is real. Fertility timelines are real. Family pressure is real. The fear of starting over is real.

But should any of those things choose your spouse for you?

There’s a difference between being marriage-minded and being panic-driven.

Being marriage-minded sounds like: “I know I want marriage and children, so I’m dating with clarity and intention.”

Being panic-driven sounds like: “I’m scared I won’t find someone else in time, so maybe I should make this work even though something feels wrong.”

That second one can be dangerous.

I also think South Asian dating adds another layer because once families are involved, a relationship can start feeling like a community project. It’s not just your breakup anymore. It’s your parents’ disappointment, your relatives’ questions, your friends’ assumptions, and the imagined future everyone already assigned to you.

But marrying the wrong person because starting over feels scary can cost far more than starting over ever would.

So I’m curious how people here think about this:

If someone is 35+ and still wants biological children, should that change how much they’re willing to compromise in a relationship?

Where’s the line between being realistic about time and settling out of fear?

And would you leave a long-term relationship or engagement at 35+ if you knew deep down it wasn’t right?
