What is this garbage? Why is message search so bad?

Does anyone know how to work message search? I used to be able to type something like "dog" and it would show any message where dog was typed. Now it says "nothing found" unless I click a category like "known" then it shows all known contacts and most recent convos. and then if I type dog it only highlights any word dog if it's already visable in the contacts last message. This is absolutely garbage how is this app so bad? Does anyone know a work around or a message alternatives that works? I'm about ready to switch to apple at this point
