New to NYC/ Queens. How do you find stuff to do ?
Me (50/M) and my kid (12) moved to NYC just a little over a week ago. I’ve managed to find a job (I start Monday) and an apartment about 15 minutes from the school i'll be teaching at, so all the boring logicatical stuff is handled expect for the moving out of our Air BnB.
Now I’m trying to figure out the fun stuff - living life!
We just moved back to the U.S. after living in Portugal. We’re new to NYC, so I’m particularly interested in the “you only know about this if you live here” resources. Facebook groups, WhatsApp groups, Discords, obscure newsletters, local IG accounts, neighborhood blogs, whatever. I know like 2 people in the area, but they're way out there in Jersey City.
My daughter is starting middle school and I’m trying to get her into things outside of school. She’s interested in:
- Flag football
- Softballl
- Voice/singing lessons
- Theater/performing arts
- Cool stuff for middle schoolers that isn't just another after-school homework program
- Basically anything that helps her meet other kids and build a life here
I'm interested in things like D&D, sci-fi, writing, hip-hop, live music, food festivals, good food, vintage/thrifting, flea markets, hiking groups, and generally weird/cool NYC shit.
I’m also looking for somewhere to do striking/MMA/kickboxing. Ideally somewhere I can get a workout and occasionally hit things and maybe a hiking group if those are a thing here.
I’m also interested in the neighborhood stuff like Queens Night Market, community organizations, volunteer opportunities, food and cultural events, neighborhood happenings, etc. I’ve found plenty of the city-wide resources, but I’m looking for more local stuff.
What should we be following, joining, subscribing to, or lurking in?
