How do you organise your research?

Seeking advice-academic

Hi! I'm starting my PhD this september and have no idea how to keep my stuff organised.

During my master's I had a drive with all my subjects divided into folders by departments and within those I organised homework, notes, pdfs, etc. according to that specific subject.

Atm I already have a few completed aricles, papers and presentations and their corresponding notes and sources organised into individual folders but I feel like I could do way better than this.

Mind you I am a historian so I have lots of reading and note-taking involved and practically no lab work.

How do you guys personally organise your stuff? What is your system? Are any of yall keeping the material on a drive like me or no?
