Do you think he could regret it and come back ?

I’ve been talking with this guy since June, so it’s been about two months. We’ve never actually met IRL because we live far from each other, but we still became pretty emotionally involved.
At first, he told me he wanted to build something, but slowly, without rushing. He made it seem like he genuinely wanted to invest in it. We flirted a lot, talked about potentially meeting etc.

Over time, I started feeling him becoming more distant and putting in less effort. Eventually, he told me he realized he didn’t have the energy for a relationship anymore. He said he already had too many problems/things to deal with and didn’t want another person or relationship adding more to his life.

What pissed me off at first was that I was the one who had to bring the subject up for him to finally tell me this. When he first explained everything, I honestly didn’t react very well. I was hurt and angry, so I was replying with things like “I don’t care,” telling him to stop messaging me, etc. I was basically reacting out of emotion.
After that, once I had calmed down, I realized I still had two questions I genuinely wanted answers to, so I sent him a long message.

And this wasn’t a “please don’t leave me” paragraph or me trying to make him feel bad. My tone was actually very direct. I told him I still stood by my goodbye, but now that I was calmer, I wanted to know how long he had actually been feeling this way and whether “I don’t have the energy for a relationship” basically meant “I don’t have the energy for a relationship with you.”

I told him he didn’t need to sugarcoat anything because I wanted him to be completely honest. I also made it clear that I wasn’t trying to change his mind or keep contact with him. Once I got my answers, I was done.
He told me he was disappointed by my initial reaction and that it didn’t exactly make him feel like coming toward me or reaching out. But after my long message, he explained his reasons and I didn’t argue with him or try to convince him otherwise. I told him I understood better now and thanked him for explaining himself.

At one point, I also told him that I hoped receiving my affection at least made him feel good. He said he basically never says things like that, but that it meant a lot to him.
And one thing he said really stuck with me:
“I don’t like it either. But if it ends now, there’ll be less suffering in the future. It’s the wiser decision long-term.”
After that, I wished him well and deleted him everywhere.
And now I’m conflicted.

Part of me REALLY wanted to just disappear, go completely silent and let him feel my absence. I wanted him to maybe realize what he lost or regret his decision. But instead, I sent that paragraph because I needed those answers before actually letting go.
So now I’m wondering: Did I ruin the possibility of him missing me/regretting his decision by sending that message? Or does the fact that I eventually calmed down, communicated clearly, didn’t beg, didn’t try to change his mind, understood his decision and then completely disappeared still leave room for him to eventually feel my absence?

And especially for guys: Have you ever ended things with a girl because you were overwhelmed, had too much going on and genuinely thought ending it was the “wiser” choice long-term, only to regret it later once she actually disappeared?
I’m not asking whether I should wait for him. I just want honest perspectives from people who’ve actually been in a similar situation.
