What would happen if Tom Bombadil ate the ring?

My immediate assumption is that it would buy them another two years / year and a half at least to prepare for the war of the ring, which they could do a lot of different things with. Frodo could use that time to train, Gandalf could try to get together ten bucks to pay the eagles, erebor could mobilize. But the more I think about it the more it seems like if they lost Lebennin the ring wouldn't even matter.
