How can I get more battle passes for free?

I opened my pokemon go for the first time in a year and saw I had a handful of battle passes and one premium battle pass in my item bag.

With the community event taking place this weekend I wanna be prepared when I visit a public park that has numerous gyms that are sure to have battles going on.
