Thought on Servant of The Lake (spoiler alert)
I finished the game, not 100%, just the first playthrough and I really enjoyed it. William’s voice actor absolutely nailed it. I swear the entire budget went into him, lol. His voice was a pleasure to listen to.
I got chills whenever the old music from Roots came back. I’ll go out on a limb and say that this might be one of the best entries in the series, if not the best. The puzzles weren’t too difficult, there were only 2-3 times when I got completely stuck. Thankfully, I never had to look up a guide, I managed to figure everything out myself.
They also added a notebook where you can draw for people who have trouble remembering certain things (I didn’t need it). I just wish there had been more days so I could spend more time enjoying the moments.
Rusty Lake games really do have a certain feeling to them. You wait a long time for the release, get incredibly excited when it finally comes out, have a great time playing it, and then you’re left with this sad emptiness when it’s over.
I still have some questions, though. Did James’s mother become a corrupted soul and go into "oblivion"? Where was James sent?
As far as I understand, Servant of the Lake takes place before the events of Hotel. Poor Harvey has been through so much.
How does the elixir decide who gets to live and who dies? Can people who have already drunk the elixir actually die from it? I feel like they kind of retconned the secret ending from Roots, where the brothers try the elixir. Did Aldous really achieve double enlightenment, lol? The guy is seriously lucky.
Overall, I think that’s pretty much everything. My thoughts are all over the place, but I really, really enjoyed the game. I’m eagerly waiting for the next one. I hope it continues the story of this strange family, although I’m not sure what else there is to tell about them. Maybe a game about the alchemist brothers’ parents and how they learned about their children’s “destinies.”
