Talk to me about crash test safety for ride-along e-bikes with kids.
I love cycling, I bike commuted in an urban area for many years, and have also done some long distance day trips in the local area. I'm now a dad, and I see so many kids being dropped off for school on e-bikes that have some sort of kids ride along section.
In an urban area, I've had my share of crashes and spills where someone not paying attention hit me - all of which i was fortunately okay but were strongly in the category of "I was lucky someone around me wasn't distracted".
Any time i look up any sort of crash testing with kids on ride along e-bikes, I get two categories. Either "we just didn't do it, we have no idea how safe this is" or "treat it like a motorcycle, there is no safe speed for kids to be on an 80lb + vehicle on an urban road, even in a bike lane".
I feel like I'm missing something. Is there some data out there showing that kids are generally okay in slower crashes or falls on these things (wearing a helmet, properly buckled in to whatever apparatus the bike has), or are parents genuinely just hoping for the best and accepting because 99% of rides will be fine, they won't have that one crash that is enough for lifelong debilitating injury to their kid?
