RTX 5080 has a broken/missing retention tab on the 16-pin connector. Should I be worried?
Hey guys,
I recently bought a second-hand Gigabyte RTX 5080 and after installing it I noticed that the retention tab/latch on the GPU-side 16-pin power connector seems to be broken/missing.
The GPU itself works perfectly. I've tested it with 3DMark Time Spy, Solar Bay Extreme and Hunt: Showdown at native 4K Ultra for around 10 minutes.
Performance seems completely normal, clocks are around 2.8–2.9 GHz under load, GPU temperatures are around 65–67°C and VRAM around 68–70°C. The card pulls around 330–360W under heavy load and I haven't seen any crashes, power drops or anything unusual.
The connector itself also seems to fit quite firmly. It doesn't feel loose and I actually have to apply some force to move it once it's plugged in.
However, the little retention tab/latch that should lock the connector in place is missing/broken.
One thing I'm not completely sure about: the latch on the NVIDIA adapter itself seems quite flat, so I'm not even sure how much the missing tab on the GPU actually affects the mechanical connection in this particular case.
I've already checked the serial number with Gigabyte and the card appears to be under warranty until 2030. I don't have the original purchase invoice, though, since I bought it second-hand.
I'm considering contacting Gigabyte and asking if they can repair/replace the connector, but I'm not sure whether this would be considered accidental physical damage and therefore not covered by warranty.
Would you personally keep using the card like this if the connector is firmly seated, or would you try to get it repaired?
I'm mainly worried about the connector potentially moving slightly over time or developing a bad connection under high load.
Thanks!
