Nobie: we're building a better spreadsheet for you, give us feedback
Hey everyone, my name is Nathan, I'm one of the co-founders of Nobie. This post is artisanally written by me, a real human being, so I'd appreciate if you took the time to skim it. I'm doing my best to follow the rules here, so far as I can tell, this community is okay with this kind of post, so long as it's good faith.
TL;DR: We're building a "better" Excel. It's free for most use-cases (and probably all use-cases in this subreddit) I want to be clear that it's not perfect yet, but it can do a lot, and it'll only get better. I'm here asking for feedback, since this is one of the larger spreadsheet communities, and we're trying to make something awesome for all of you. I'll be here throughout the day to answer any questions / respond to feedback. If you file a bug, we'll do our best to have it fixed in 24 hours.
With that out of the way, here's the long-form post:
We're building the best spreadsheet. Period. Full stop.
It's not perfect today, but we do have:
- A native MacOS app (with native linux and windows apps in internal testing) that opens instantly and runs like butter (and if it doesn't let us know. We care a lot about this.)
- A mac and linux CLI (for agentic use and/or developer use)
- Support for all the keyboard shortcuts you're used to
- If you use Claude through the website, you can tell it to use "@nobie-org/nobie" to work on xlsx files, and you'll get better output than the tools they use by default
- Support for all non-cloud Excel functions (no copilot / stock history / etc) with bit-perfect math for all the crazy stats / finance functions (we're, to my knowledge, the only people to have achieved this).
- We're targeting 100% compatibility with Excel, so anything you create in Nobie will be open-able in Excel, and Nobie should be able to open your Excel-authored workbooks.
- Native integrations with Claude and Codex. We support launching and installing them directly in the Nobie UI, and when you use them in Nobie, they get enriched with a lot of useful context to make them much smarter than they'd otherwise be in other tools.
- Claude and Codex have MCP and CLI integration into the app, they can do anything you could do in Nobie.
We have plans for so much more:
- We believe Excel users are software developers, so we want to treat them with more respect than they've been given, which means a full suite of IDE tooling:
- built in support for profiling workbooks to find out precisely why they're slow
- an awesome debugger to allow you to walk through formulas as they're evaluated and inspect their values (even through cycles and what-if scenarios)
- customizable UI layout
- Precise visibility into what re-calced when you make a change
