Family caretaker

Hi all - newbie to this community here. I currently am the informal caretaker for a family member with Alzheimer’s. He’s relatively young for his diagnosis (66 at the time of official diagnosis). He’s on medication that supposedly slows the progression, which sometimes I think works great and others not so much.

Anyway, he is a single man who lives alone and about 60 minutes from me. He is relatively self sufficient since he’s early on in diagnosis and not rapidly progressing, but I still like to check in at a weekly/biweekly basis depending on what’s going on.

There are moments where things hit the fan and he needs help right away (confused with pills, misplaced keys, etc) and I cannot get there quickly since I am not close and also I work full time.

I’ve been trying to find resources to help out here so he can continue to be on his own for as long as it is safe for him to do so. I do not want to take away his freedom and his life until necessary and apparent that it is not safe for him.

Does anyone have recommendations in the NYC area for weekly check in type resources or anything you think may be useful for me? Help from family hasn’t been useful here and I feel like I am drowning trying to keep up with my life and his. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated 💜
