I keep tracking success with something I never actually picked for myself
Lately I've noticed that almost every time I check whether I'm doing okay, the yardstick I'm using is something I inherited from family expectations or school rather than a goal I chose. It feels automatic, so I don't even question it until the end of the day when I'm adding up numbers or checking boxes that don't line up with what I care about now. The weird part is that it still stings when the numbers are bad, even though I know they aren't my own priorities. I guess I'm wondering how other people catch themselves measuring life by rules they didn't write and what they do when they notice it. Is it enough to just swap the metric, or do I also need to figure out where the habit started so it doesn't sneak back in? Would love any thoughts on how to redraw that line without feeling like I'm cheating at something that wasn't mine to begin with.
