I was a bit skeptical before leaving for Colombia: I had read conflicting stories about data connectivity for tourists, between local SIMs to buy in stores and extremely expensive international roaming.

In the end, I opted for a data eSIM activated before the flight. I installed the QR code from home the day before departure (you need an internet connection to do this, so it's best not to wait until the last minute). When I landed in Bogotá, the phone was already online, without having to look for a store or show documents.

I traveled between Bogotá, Medellín, and the Caribbean coast (Cartagena and Santa Marta) for about two weeks, and the connection never gave me any serious problems, not even at a hotspot when I needed to connect my laptop for work from a coworking space in Medellín. The only problem: in some more remote areas, the signal drops a bit, but that's normal with any local operator.
