Indian family’s disappointing experience with a Thailand tour package — Pattaya vendors, Coral Island safety & itinerary issues
We recently travelled to Thailand as a family and booked a package through an Indian travel company, MakeMyTrip.
I wanted to share our experience specifically regarding some of the on-ground tours and vendors in Pattaya, because I’d genuinely like to know whether what happened to us is normal or whether we were treated poorly.
🚤 Coral Island
The biggest concern was during the Coral Island speedboat excursion.
The speedboat was travelling at high speed, and we were concerned about the way life jackets were handled. We were not properly briefed before departure about retrieving/using the jackets ourselves, and they weren’t individually distributed to us before getting on the boat.
When we later complained to MakeMyTrip, their response was essentially that life jackets were available on the boat and that guests were expected to wear them themselves.
My question to people familiar with Thai boat excursions is:
Is it normal for tourists to be expected to independently retrieve life jackets from storage without a proper safety briefing before a high-speed boat journey?
I’m genuinely interested in hearing from people who have done similar excursions in Pattaya.
🍽️** Food
We’re a vegetarian Indian family and had several disappointing food experiences during the package.
On the All Star Cruise, there wasn’t suitable Indian vegetarian food for us, and even food that appeared vegetarian was reportedly prepared using fish oil.
At the hotel, vegetarian breakfast options were also extremely limited.
🏝️ Coral Island vendor experience
Apart from the safety concern, we also felt the local vendor treated us extremely poorly. The overall attitude towards us was unpleasant and made us feel like we were an inconvenience rather than paying tourists.
🏛️ Sanctuary of Trut**h
Another issue was the timing of the Sanctuary of Truth visit.
Our itinerary originally indicated flexibility/“ANYTIME”, but the on-ground team later told us that we had to arrange the visit around an approximately 5 PM timing, forcing us to rearrange our day’s plans.
When we reached the attraction, we were told by the venue staff that entry was available much later in the evening.
This created unnecessary itinerary disruption.
🛶 Kanchanaburi
There was also an activity-choice issue. Our itinerary indicated a choice between Longtail Boat and Bamboo Rafting, but we were not offered that choice and were put on the Longtail Boat.
Later we were told that the choice was “subject to availability”, although we don’t recall that limitation being explained beforehand.
Overall, Thailand itself was beautiful and we enjoyed many aspects of the country, but some of the organised-tour/vendor experiences were genuinely disappointing.
I’m curious to hear from people who regularly travel to Thailand:
Are these experiences typical with organised package tours in Pattaya, or did we simply end up with a particularly poor operator?
Would especially appreciate input from people familiar with the Coral Island speedboat tours.
