Keeping car safe

Hello so im new to Tucson and have off campus housing near the u of a. I came back to Phoenix and noticed my back left brake light has a crack it looks like someone hit it hard enough to crack it. I had my car parked normally and where we live (a house) im parked next to other cars ( other tenants/roommates). We park in the back of the house and there’s no camera there. It’s also completely open to the public; no gate around the cars but yes to around the house. My question is how can I avoid this happening again and/or how can I prevent damage to my car?

Any advice or suggestions would be helpful.
