The first ninety seconds of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves? That is absolutely amazing - I’d even call it an argument! Look.

Naughty Dog's research team had established something uncomfortable about player psychology before development began: people form a permanent impression of a game within the first ninety seconds of play. Not the first hour. Not the first level. Ninety seconds. After that window closes, players are either committed or they're already calculating whether to return the game.

Amy Hennig and her team built the opening of Uncharted 2 in full awareness of this constraint. Every element of those first ninety seconds was placed to communicate a specific piece of information about what kind of game this was going to be.

The game opens in medias res - Nathan Drake slumped in a train car, impaled, hanging from a cliff. No cutscene establishing the situation. No dialogue explaining how he got there. Just consequence, immediate and physical, demanding response before context.

This communicates: this game assumes you can keep up. It will not stop to explain itself.

Drake begins moving - climbing, sliding, making decisions under physical pressure. The controls communicate immediately: responsive, fluid, designed for a specific kind of kinetic engagement. Within thirty seconds, players understand how the game feels in their hands.

This communicates: the moment-to-moment experience is the product.

The environment is spectacular. Ice. Snow. Scale. A train hanging in impossible geography. The visual ambition is established before a single enemy appears.

This communicates: this game has something to show you.

By the time the first interactive challenge appears - a section of the train beginning to collapse, players have received three complete pieces of information about the game's identity. They know how it feels, what it looks like and that it respects their ability to respond to situations without preparation.

Psychological research on first impressions is consistent across contexts: humans form categorical judgments within seconds and then spend significant cognitive energy confirming those judgments rather than revising them. This means a game's opening is not just its first impression - it is the lens through which everything that follows will be interpreted.

Naughty Dog designed their opening knowing that what players felt in the first ninety seconds would color every subsequent hour of gameplay.

The train. The ice. The immediate physical jeopardy. None of it is accidental. All of it is architecture.

Which game's opening sequence communicated everything about its identity so completely that you knew within the first minute whether it was going to be for you?

Naughty Dog had 90 seconds to make you love Uncharted 2. Research said that's when players decide everything. Here's how they used every single one of them.
