Awaken Beyond Emotion: The Bhagavad Gītā’s Timeless Path to Inner Freedom and Self-Realisation (23 of 33)

2. The Purpose of Anger

From the perspective of Advaita Vedānta, anger is not the ideal response to life’s challenges. However, the underlying impulse that often gives rise to anger—the desire to uphold justice, protect dignity, and restore righteousness—reflects a legitimate concern for dharma.

The Bhagavad Gītā teaches that injustice should never be ignored. Instead, it calls for decisive and righteous action guided by wisdom, self-mastery, and compassion—not by emotional agitation or hatred.

This principle is beautifully demonstrated when Śrī Kṛṣṇa instructs Arjuna to fulfill his duty as a warrior. Arjuna is commanded to fight, yet never to be consumed by anger, hatred, or personal vengeance. His actions are to arise from clarity, not hostility; from duty, not ego.

True strength is not the absence of action—it is the mastery of one’s emotions while acting fearlessly for what is right.

Key Takeaway

Advaita Vedānta teaches that wisdom transforms anger into courageous, compassionate action. Stand firmly for justice, fulfill your duty, and protect what is right—but let your actions be guided by clarity, never by hatred.
