Beating a dead horse
If people who have been given the diagnostic label of IH can still experience frequent and consistent sleep paralysis, hallucinations, and other signs of REM intrusions, then how does that really differentiate from NT2? Just because they had less than two SOREMPs on the particular day they took the MSLT? I know there’s a lot of talk about how unreliable the diagnostic criteria is for these N/IH sleep disorders, but it truly is so frustrating how underdeveloped it really is. It’s consistently stated that “everyone is different” which is so true for everything, but there comes a point when we’re talking about diagnostic criteria where that mindset just makes the system significantly less meaningful. And the REM aspect is just one of many overlapping areas between the two disorders. Anyone else feel this way? Am I out of line or missing a big factor? I could talk for ages about the nuances of these sleep disorders and how the diagnostic criteria is so variable and flawed. (Disclaimer: I am specifically referring to Idiopathic Hypersomnia vs. Narcolepsy Type 2. I recognize there is a more clear line between these two disorders and Narcolepsy Type 1.)
