Three specimens with job titles this time: a toolmaker, a camp robber, and a fence.

The one I can't stop thinking about is the Canada Jay. It was Canada Jay from 1831, then in 1957 the AOU renamed it Gray Jay - not for taste or politics, but because they were standardizing subspecies names and keeping it would have produced "Alaska Canada Jay" and "Oregon Canada Jay". A filing convention overrode a bird's name for sixty-one years. It came back in 2018 because Dan Strickland, a retired naturalist from Algonquin Park, wrote the proposal asking for it. One person filed a correction and the record changed.

Also in this one: sea otters keep a favorite rock for life and carry it between dives in a pocket of loose skin under the arm, and a cacomixtle in Mexico City that the card accuses of burying the evidence, when the actual studied behavior is that it files it. Same place. Every night.

Every fact on screen is checkable and I'd genuinely rather be corrected than be wrong. We found one of our own card texts backwards this week - it claimed no monarch survives the migration south, which is the wrong way round - and the fix went out as an amendment printed on the card itself.

If you catch another one, say so and I'll file it.

SPECIMEN SPOTLIGHT №3 - a bird lost its name for 61 years to a filing convention, and one retired park naturalist filed it back
