The verses describe the attitude of the polytheists of Quraysh when the Qur’an left them unable to respond to its challenge and they could find no way to refute it. So they began demanding signs and miracles from the Prophet ﷺ according to their own desires, saying that they would not believe until they saw what they had asked for.
Among their demands was what they said in Surah Al-Isra:
**﴿أَ****و****ْ تُ****س****ْقِطَ ****ا****لسّ****َ****مَاء****َ**** كَمَ****ا**** زَعَ**م**ْتَ **عَلَيْنَا كِسَفًا﴾ \[92\]
That is, that pieces of the sky should fall upon them.
What is remarkable is that they did not ask for a sign that would guide them or evidence that would lead them to the truth. Rather, they asked for something that would bring about their own destruction, as a challenge to the Prophet ﷺ.
Then Allah تعالى reveals to the Prophet ﷺ the nature of their denial: even if they were to see pieces of the sky falling upon them with their own eyes, that still would not be enough for them to believe. Instead, they would look for another explanation that agreed with what they wanted, saying:
**﴿سَحَ****ا****بٌ مَّ**رْكُومٌ﴾
“Accumulated clouds”—meaning, *this is merely a mass of clouds piled one upon another.*
It is as though the verse portrays the nature of denial for us: a person sees the very sign he asked for before his eyes, yet still searches for any explanation that will turn him away from acknowledging its reality.
Here the truth becomes clear: **the problem was not a lack of evidence, but an inward refusal to accept the truth.**
And this was not unique to the polytheists of Quraysh. The people of Shu‘ayb عليه السلام made the same demand as a challenge, saying:
**﴿فَأَس****ْ****قِطْ ****ع****َلَي****ْ****نَ****ا**** كِسَف****ً****ا ****م****ِّن****َ**** ا****ل****سَّمَاءِ **إ**ِن كُنتَ مِنَ الصَّ**ادِقِينَ﴾ \[Ash-Shu‘ara’: 187\]
“So cause fragments of the sky to fall upon us, if you are truly among the truthful.”
They demanded punishment mockingly and defiantly, and when the punishment came, it destroyed them.
In this address there is reassurance and steadfastness for the Prophet ﷺ, and there is a message for us as well: **not everyone who refuses the truth is lacking evidence, and we are not responsible for the choices others make.** A person may be shown the truth with complete clarity, yet the other party may still choose to see it as something else.
