pet dogs

I am starting in biglaw in NYC soon and I am researching how to provide for my medium-size adult dog (not a service animal) on the assumption that I will be working long unpredictable hours. I am sure it is going to be hard and expensive but I am hoping it won't be impossible, and I can still be a good caretaker to my dog. Any advice on how to balance the job with the joys of pet ownership is welcome. TIA!
