Hair advice for goth guys

I have short hair and I've been trying to style it a lot more to the likes of Robert Smith and a creator by the name of Sweeney Deville but it never looks how I imagined it to be, do you guys know what kind of products I should use and what kind of brushes to use? I have a couple combs and some hair gel just not sure what other brushes and techniques I should do to give it that whispy hair look.
