Dinner is crab rangoons, watermelon, bacon, and 1879 Old Forester.

Was in a sorority at a southern university and was an overall good experience. Fun memories, great leadership opportunities, not without superficial girl drama that naturally occurs with 19-21 year old girls. Our chapter had a reunion event to invite alumni back, something they had not been able to do since covid and policy changes at the university, and since it had been almost 10 years since I was in college, in a midwest city now and was free that weekend for a road trip, decided to go. I had written a couple letters of recommendation, donated a few times, and kept in touch with a lot of girls from the chapter.

Ended up being layers of disappointment. Found out that the chapter advisor a few years after I graduated was terrible with money and wiped chapter funds we spent years building up on senseless items, and the alumni event budget went to booking the nicest venue in town, with nothing left over except frozen Walmart meatballs & spaghetti for lunch. Goodie bags had expired pocket mints and how to donate to upcoming events.

Whatever, didn’t come for the food. Was happy to see some girls in the chapter the same time as me, girls I had good memories with as well as petty drama, who apparently had never moved on from the petty drama. Issues related to how the homecoming float got decorated, standards hearings for drinking underage in public, boys who are bald now. Backhanded comments were made back and forth the entire event, where me and another girl who never really talked back then used the time to catch up on life and add each other on linkedin when we realized we had similar jobs.

Went out as a group to the bars that night and again, petty drama kept getting brought back up, and I realized these girls had never moved on from college, and wanted to relive the drama of it all. We had good jobs, families, new lives, but it did not matter. It was not a look back in laugh type of visit, or even “wow we were idiots back then”. It became cringe and depressing as the night went on, mainly because something that was a positive experience became embarrassing, and I regretted going since now I can’t revisit the memories or even the place without feeling cringe.

Not looking for advice, just venting on how sad it can feel to outgrow and move on from positive memories. And validate for any other girls feeling sad about moving on from their younger selves.

Anyways, gonna end up donating to Girl Scouts instead of paying for recruitment meal donations they keep requesting this summer!

Sorority reunion made me glad to have moved on.
