In search of dragon books/graphic novels!
Hello! I'm new to posting here and seeking for recommendations for books or book series that have dragons in a central theme. Graphic novels are fine too
I am specifically looking for dragons that are majestic, intimidating or both and can come across as real threat. I prefer intelligent depictions and don't want the dragons to be subservient to humans (like in many Dragonrider settings). This is the most important characteristic to me in a book
I prefer books with dragon or non human POV but realize those are probably not that common so honestly anything where dragons feel highly important in the setting will do. I'm looking for detailed world building and preferably low focus on romance / no romance at all. I also avoid explicit content. I like settings with high magic and lots of diversity in sapient species. Something with DnD, LOTR or Elden Ring vibes is basically perfect. I strongly prefer fictional settings, not Earth
Would be ideal if the books were for adults or YA. Not looking for slice of life but some kind of exploration in an interesting setting. It would also be great if the dragons don't all die in the end. And no books that have dragon shapeshifted in other forms a lot
I've read:
- Lord of the Rings and adjacent work (really enjoy the dragons in these)
- Wings of Fire (dragon societies are nice but wish they were more fleshed out)
- Age of Fire (pretty good setting)
- The Remembered War (didn't like the humor but the setting was pretty good)
- A Song of Ice and Fire (decent setting but a bit low fantasy for my tastes and not my favorite dragon depiction)
My favorite dragons of all time are in the Souls games and Elden Ring as well as LOTR, Dragons Dogma and Guild Wars 2 if that gives an idea! But I'm also not opposed to something that has more Monster Hunter style dragons if they're presented interestingly
Thanks in advance, I know all of this is pretty niche
