Vineland, One Battle, and Kill Bill
I just finished reading Vineland to see how much PTA mined for One Battle After Another (simplistically: the first 80 pages and the last 80).
But I found myself a little surprised how much Tarantino lifted from it for Kill Bill. DL - who was adapted into Regina Hall’s Deandra in One Battle - is an assassin who has spent years in martial arts training, learning many deadly techniques including killing someone with a touch of her palm.
At one point there is even a discussion about DL living as a normal person, which uses the metaphor of Superman presenting as Clark Kent.
And at the end of the novel I made a connection between Kill Bill and One Battle I hadn’t before: In both films a woman has a child with an affable but unexceptional stoner type but the biological father turns out to be an alpha male asshole who murders people for a living.
