المنشور:

Hi everyone

I just finished high-school, and am looking for the best majors out there to pick, I thought I should pick a major that fits me the best and that I enjoy the most. And so far I have two options: CS and mathematics.

Now, when I was 13-14, I loved programming, I learned Python -a programming language- and spent hours trying to solve problems or challenges on a website called Codewars. And there, I loved doing certain problems that were deeply linked to mathematics, which in turn sparked my love for this field.

Afterwards I started doing my own projects, things like trying to make Rubik's cube solver or a program that solves sudoku puzzles. And I loved the process and the experience so much. I didn't always succeed and make it to the end but what I enjoyed was:

  1. The freedom. you can pick any idea and build it, test it and do all the variety of things you want. And I'm hoping that there's a similar thing in mathematics, since you can pick a problem you find interesting or even make your own problem and solve it yourself (or at least hope to solve it yourself)

  2. Problem solving. Staying in your room for hours and banging your head against the wall for a long time thinking about how to solve this problem surely is frustrating but it's absolutely rewarding once you come up with the solution, let alone the process itself of coming up with ideas to do a certain problem is really fun. And again, most of the problems I enjoyed solving where related to mathematics in some sense or another.

  3. Going down the rabbit hole. Doing incredible research and learning information only a few people know about is something I enjoy a lot too, or when you learn something that deepens your understanding of the world and how things work makes my brain explode with dopamine.

Why am I writing this:

So I am here because I have a question for people who do have experience with this field (maths), will majoring in mathematics give me the experience that I enjoyed in CS? I am willing to pick maths over CS if it had more of these problems and aspects that I really enjoyed. Or perhaps math majors are living a completely different world than mine and I will end up disappointed? I am desperately waiting for a professional's response. I'd love it if you share what you are working on lately (something you picked yourself because you find intriguing)

Also, since I have to pay bills and feed myself, how good/bad are the job opportunities for math majors? If I picked math major I will either do research or teach at uni (becoming a prof), do these jobs give a good enough amount of money to live without worrying too much about your income and waiting desperately for your next monthly paycheck?

One final question. Do you know some good introductory books that will give me an idea of what the field has? Something simple enough so I can understand yet gives me a taste of the mathematical experience.

thanks for reading till the end.

Sorry for yapping a lot, I think giving a lot of details will help clarify what exactly I'm here for.
