What Does an Ideal Version of Marathon Look Like?

:M2026:Marathon (2026) Feedback

Having played the game for what I feel is a fair chunk of time, for an old dude whose primary hobby is not gaming, I have what I feel would be an ideal version of the game in my head. It probably doesn't match with anyone else's (and it certainly doesn't line up with Bungie's), but I thought I'd share it and see what everybody else's ideal version looks like.

Design/graphics/sound: No notes. Wouldn't change a thing.

Core mechanics: By which I mean movement, gunplay, abilities. Not perfect, but good enough and I'm happy with letting them tinker in the directions they're already going.

Item management/UI: A bit clunky still, but I like how they've been tinkering and I'd let them continue how they're going.

Gameplay modes: This is the biggie. What I would like to see is:

  • A rich, PVE story mode that can be played either solo or co-op/in teams that covers the onboarding and major "questlines" for the factions and does the heavy lifting for lore discovery.
  • More, and more-varied, PVPVE maps that advance faction rep, etc. through contracts, as now. Within this mode, I would like to see players who are completing contracts with the same faction tagged explicitly as allies, whether they're in your team or not, and players completing contracts for rival factions tagged as potential threats. You can assist allies, or not, but you can't actively hurt them. You can fight against potential threats or not, but you can choose to work together if you want, using proximity chat the same way you do now, and you can actively harm each other. Pre-made teams continue to work as they do now.
  • Story mode and PVPVE work together, in that contracts are used to advance the story (i.e.; you can't do the next story thing until you do contracts X & Y, or similar things).
  • Extraction continues to be a core part of both story and PVPVE modes, although it doesn't have to be a part of every story mission.

Anyway, just some thoughts I've had. What would your ideal version of the game look like?
