Intermediate bassist looking for a new bass

so ive been playing bass for a few months now on a crappy generic brand bass, it plays… and thats about it. its buzzy, its VERY heavy (to the point where i thought an ibanez gio was “too light”) and i dont think its worth spending any real money on it.

i need a new bass, my budget is around £250 but i may be willing to work up to £300 if the bass is worth the extra money… and im not entirely looking for something used — since marketplace near my area is incredibly dry and im not able to travel anywhere super far — though im sure ebay has plenty of good used basses.

so — what do you recommend?
i believe my situation allows for loaaads of basses to fit my “taste” but heres the main things i care for

a long scale — i dont like playing short scale
4 or 5 strings, i currently play a 4 string and ive been eyeing a few 5 strings
