Games with iconic first levels that are ‘breakable’ by pros.
So I’m thinking of levels like Bob-Omb Battlefield. So many people walked into that map and learned the mechanics of SM64. It was like a big playground for the player to figure out the movement mechanics with some clever rewards for those that figured things out. And once you have a firm grasp of the game, you can actually ‘break’ parts of it in ways the developers don’t seem to have intended.
I absolutely love this trope in gaming but I don’t see much of it in modern gaming. And I’m not talking about games like Fromsoft or soulslikes where the ‘breaking’ comes from enemy pattern recognition allowing an underleveled character to access areas/loot meant for later in the game. I’m also not talking about glitches or abuses in the game’s code like what most speedrunners abuse.
What I’m really looking for are masterfully crafted level 1s that teach the average player the game but also are made in such a way that a pro player can make a casual player go ‘holy shit… you can do that?!’
