Should I keep my 5-year-old dog, or would she be better off with another family?
I need to make a decision about whether I should keep my 5-year-old female Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Chloe, or consider finding her another home. I'm looking for honest feedback from other dog owners because I'm having a hard time looking at this objectively.
My mom passed away recently, and Chloe was her dog. My mom was the one who primarily handled Chloe's veterinary care, grooming, etc. I've also been a part of the dogs life from the beginning. Before my mom passed, Chloe had regular vet care, but that hasn't really been addressed since then. I'm now responsible for Chloe.
Im in the process of looking for a place to live and also the process of applying for another position within the company I'm already working at. One of the biggest issues I'm considering as it pertains to the dog is my work schedule.
I currently work full-time, and I'm typically away from home for about 10 hours a day, with 1–2 days a week where I'm gone closer to 14 hours. I don't currently have the ability to come home during the day or hire someone to check on her.
When I'm gone, I don't really know exactly what Chloe does. She hasn't destroyed things or shown obvious destructive behavior. She seems to eat and drink normally and her weight seems okay.
When I'm home, she generally seems pretty settled. She follows me around sometimes, sleeps quite a bit, likes to sit near me, and sometimes waits outside my bedroom. When I'm getting ready for work, she doesn't seem particularly distressed. She may go into her crate, lay on the couch, or sit outside my door.
When I come home, she's consistently excited to see me. She wags her tail and sometimes makes a low whining sound. She wants to go outside, and I usually take her for a walk. I generally walk her twice a day, morning and night. She likes going for walks and seems to enjoy them.
I'm not an extremely affectionate person. I pet her and interact with her, but I'm not someone who constantly cuddles all the time. I don't let her sleep in my bedroom either. She does seem to seek me out and likes being near me, though.
She does occasionally have an accident in the house, particularly on the days when I'm gone longer though I find that understandable.
Recently she's also been scratching herself quite a bit. I've been using OTC flea medication, but she hasn't been to the vet recently. I'm planning to get her checked out and get her vaccinations/licensing caught up.
Financially, I'm trying to rebuild my life. I need to get my own place, get my gym routine going again, potentially get a better car, maybe meet someone to start a family with and continue progressing in my career. I'm also considering applying for another position that could eventually pay more through commissions, but I'd have less income initially. I'm worried about taking on the ongoing expenses of having a dog while I'm trying to establish myself.
At the same time, I really do love Chloe. I don't want to put her in a shelter, and I don't want to simply give her to someone I don't know. I recently asked someone I trust, whether she would consider taking Chloe. She had previously told me she loved Chloe and needed to talk to her husband. She ultimately got back to me and said her husband doesn't want another dog right now, so that's not an option.
Part of me wonders whether Chloe would actually be happier with another family where someone could spend more time with her. On the other hand, she seems attached to me, seems comfortable when she's home, and seems happy when I'm around.
So I'm really torn.
If you were in my situation, what would you do?
Would you consider my work schedule and the amount of time Chloe spends alone to be too much for a 5-year-old dog?
Would you keep her and try to make the situation work, or would you seriously consider rehoming her?
And if you think I should keep her, what would you consider the minimum things I need to change or provide to make her quality of life acceptable?
I'm genuinely trying to figure out what's best for Chloe and what's realistically sustainable for me.
I'd appreciate honest opinions, including if you think I could make it work or if I'm not currently in a good position to keep her.
