How do you carry books?

I travel quite a lot by public transport, and I like to always carry a book in my EDC backpack. The problem is that books really suffer from being carried around. It doesn't take much to bend or tear the pages or damage the cover.

How do you guys EDC your books without ruining them? Do you use some sort of case or hard cover?
