AC Troubles

Maintenance

I thought I did all my research on the car before buying but inevitably some things slip through the cracks...

I've had my 2020 Insight EX for about three years an the AC has gone out on me twice already. The first time it went out it was the compressor which was covered under warranty. Cool, no harm there... But now the AC has gone out again (in this SoCal summer) and they are saying its a leak in the evaporator and quoted me $2600 to fix.

From what I've read/heard, this is a fault with the design of the AC system with the new eco-friendly freon they are using. If this is the case, I don't understand why they wouldn't cover the entirety of the AC system under warranty, especially since an issue with one part could cause subsequent issues with other parts. And the car is not even that old! I don't think I've heard of a car less than 10 years old having this amount of AC issues.

I like the car in general, it looks sleek and stylish as opposed to the typical rounded, bulbous shapes of most hybrids. But I use my car to do Uber part time on the side and its vital where I live. If this is a design flaw/incompatibility thing, it seems like fixing would be throwing money away to risk having the same problem within a year. I'm thinking of just taking that money and applying it to a new car, possibly an EV to further reduce maintenance costs.

Has anyone had further issues after paying out of pocket to fix the AC? If so, what parts?
