Has anyone tried building idea management internally instead of buying a platform

Building an idea portal on sharepoint or power automate sounds reasonable until the feature requests start rolling in. Scoring workflows, routing logic, department level permissions, reporting dashboards. Before long the internal tool is a full product that nobody on the IT side actually signed up to own.

The real cost is not the initial build. It is the maintenance. Every process change turns into a dev ticket. Every new stakeholder wants a custom view. The backlog for an internal tool that is not anyones core job just keeps growing.

Buy versus build for idea management really depends on whether your team wants to be in the software maintenance business for the next few years or just needs the problem solved.
