Texas has permitless carry — but how many people actually know the difference between that and an LTC?
One thing I’ve noticed talking with gun owners around Texas is that a lot of people assume permitless carry basically made the Texas LTC pointless.
You absolutely can legally carry without an LTC if you meet the requirements, but the license itself still has benefits — things like reciprocity when traveling, campus carry, certain differences in where licensed vs. unlicensed carry is allowed, and the ability for a qualifying LTC to serve as an alternative to the NICS check when purchasing from an FFL.
I actually started MyLTCTexas.com partly because I kept running into people who had no idea those differences existed. I try to make the process and Texas carry laws easier to understand rather than just telling everyone, “You need a license.”
For the Texans here who carry: did you already know there were still benefits to having an LTC after permitless carry passed, or did you basically assume the license wasn’t necessary anymore?
Interested to hear what people actually think.
