Surrogacy and the Financial Abortion

Marriage/Children

So if you've been on Reddit for the last five minutes you've probably heard this story:

  1. Parents hire surrogate.
  2. Fetus has heart defects.
  3. Parents (whose DNA makes up the fetus) wants to abort.
  4. Surrogate says "No way" and flees to Texas.

Enough time has passed and the surrogate has given birth to the baby. So who is financially responsible for taking care of the baby?

Well, in the case of it being a two-person relationship between one man and one woman, if the woman becomes pregnant and decides to carry the baby to term, even against the man's wishes, the man is still on the hook for the child's wellbeing for 18 years.

Well surely people will see that the biological parents be liable because they made the informed consensual decision to make the baby, right? Yeah, no. Reddit is tweaking about the idea that the parents would have to pay when the surrogate's only role was to be the incubator.

Gee, it sure is interesting how quickly "My body, my choice" and "Financial responsibility of having a kid" falls apart when it becomes three people instead of two, huh? Only real difference is now there's a woman involved in potentially paying.

I hope either the DNA parents are financially liable or this reopens the conversation about financial abortion and the idea that it takes (at least) 2 people to make a baby.
