Would you read a webnovel where the city is the main protagonist?
Hi everyone!
I’m planning a webnovel and I’m trying to figure out whether the structure would work for webnovel readers.
The basic idea is that the city itself is the main protagonist.
It’s a strange, dangerous city where people have different abilities, weird creatures exist, and much of the history of the world has been lost. There was a war in the past, and somehow the history of what happened—and what the world was like before it—has been gradually erased or forgotten.
The story would be about exploring the city and slowly discovering its secrets. The reader would learn about the world at the same time as the characters do.
Rather than following one protagonist exclusively, I’d have several different POVs that show different sides of the city. For example:
A detective investigating murders, disappearances, black-market activity and strange cases.
A teenager who gets involved with the city's black market.
Other characters from completely different parts of society that I would introduce as the story progresses.
Their stories wouldn't necessarily all intersect immediately. Some might eventually collide, while others could show completely different aspects of the city.
My main concern is the structure.
When reading a webnovel, do you generally want to follow the same protagonist continuously, or are you happy to jump between different characters if each storyline is interesting and they're all contributing to a larger mystery?
Basically, would you enjoy something where the question isn't just "What happens to this character?" but also "What the hell is going on with this city?"
I’m particularly interested in hearing from people who read things like The Wandering Inn, Dungeon Crawler Carl, or other webnovels with multiple POVs.
Would this kind of structure make you curious, or would frequent POV switches make you lose interest?
