Driving on heritage railways

It occurred to me last night whilst watching TV. I know that on the mainline drivers have to take training on train types and routes and are not allowed to drive outside of what they are trained on.

When heritage railways have gala weekends or similar. Are their own drivers allowed to drive the borrowed locos even though they may not have driven the particular type of train before? Or would they need a trained driver to drive it.
